Description

The work presented on this poster is the very beginning of the research I will be carrying out during my PhD thesis on the Gulf Stream separation. We present here some ideas to draw a mathematical formalism to study this oceanography problem. Indeed, one of the main issue seems to be the interaction between the Ekman boundary layers, which ensure wind-driven circulation, and the Munk and Stommel boundary layers, which correspond to the intensification of currents on the western edges of the ocean basins. This interaction seems to exist along the slopes of the ocean basins edges. We will therefore introduce some results from numerical experiments to push through this idea, and an outline of a mathematical setting that could allow a proper computation of the boundary layer interaction.
