Séminaire
Understanding the mechanisms for the driving of planetary jets
Steve Tobias (University of Leeds)
Séminaire organisé par le LATMOS.
Description
In this talk I shall outline the mechanisms responsible for the driving of jets in planetary atmospheres and interiors in both stably stratified and convective domains. The interaction with rotation plays a key role in setting correlations that lead to the formation of nonlinear Rossby waves and hence jets. I shall highlight the open questions including what sets the jet amplitude and describe methods for constructing minimal statistical models of the process.
Steve Tobias is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Leeds. He is an internationally recognized expert in the mathematical study of rotating fluid dynamics.
