Séminaire
Studying ocean-atmosphere feedbacks from shipborne platforms using an advanced lidar synergy

Description
During the EUREC4A project in the Caribics from January 20 – February 20, 2020, a new lidar synergy was operated on the R/V MS-Merian. It consisted of a vertically staring Doppler lidar and a water-vapor and temperature Raman lidar as well as an six-beam staring Doppler lidar. For the first time, this combination of sensors allowed for continuous profiling of mean and turbulent quantities along the ship’s track including motion compensation. Due to the high resolution and accuracy of the measurements, it is possible to relate the observations from the marine boundary layer to the lower troposphere to the properties of the ocean surface.
This will be demonstrated by several measurements during EUREC4A such as latent and sensible heat flux profiles. We propose to operate this unique synergy also during the upcoming WHIRLS campaign for the investigation of the Agulhas current system during June and July 2026 and discuss the corresponding sensor synergy on the R/V Marion Dufresne II.
