Description
My main aim during my sabbatical is to build a bridge between groundwater science and society as well as politics. Climate and global change put enormous pressure on our water resources for drinking water production, water dependent ecosystems, irrigation and industrial use.
Even in water-rich Switzerland, where 80% of the drinking water production is covered by groundwater, water managers nationwide think about artificially recharging aquifers to cover the growing demand of water and to adapt to climate change.
I want to promote managed aquifer recharge (MAR) which is in general the process of artificially transfer surface water such as river or lake water as well as excessive precipitation, for example, to feed groundwater bodies. The idea is to use water at high availability and store it safely for use when water becomes scare.
My main aim during my sabbatical is thus to write a book on the basics, requirements, implementation and sustainable maintenance of MAR systems and projects.
