Resolving the equilibration puzzle with a mesoscale-dominant ocean
Stephen Griffies
Séminaire du LOCEAN.
Description
Climate models have historically presented an equilibration puzzle: models require thousands of years to spin down to a preindustrial equilibrium when initialized with present-day observations. A recent GFDL climate model, however, now demonstrates spin-down times of roughly 150 years, shedding 400 ZJ of heat in the process, as anticipated by observations. I will describe how advancements in numerical methods and resolution led to the emergence of this new class of mesoscale-dominant ocean models, which offer more faithful and efficient equilibration.
