Séminaire
From Fighting Floods to Living with Them: Social Sciences and Flood Resilience
Steven Forrest (Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull, UK)
Séminaire du département de Géosciences de l’ENS.
Description
Flooding is a global societal challenge that is predicted to get worse. It affects cities across the world and causes significant disruption and damages. There is growing recognition that a holistic approach is needed to face the floods challenge – with the role of social sciences becoming increasingly prominent in recent years.
In this seminar, Dr Steven Forrest explores the shift towards flood resilience and its embrace of social and spatial approaches and solutions to manage floods. He focuses on the ‘rise of civil society’ and its implications for governance, the increased emphasis on spatial and urban planning for managing floods, and the need to embed justice and fairness into future flood resilience approaches.
Steven includes international examples, including his work on creative participatory approaches (e.g. in ‘Pursuing a Climate Resilient and Net Zero Hull’), on serious gaming and post-flood recovery (e.g. The Flood Recovery Game, UK/Denmark), and on bridging theory-practice (e.g. The Flood Awareness Centre in Hull).
