Description
The Casamance estuary is located in the southern part of Senegal east of a large shallow plateau. The estuary’s coasts contrast with the dry, almost desert-like coasts of northern Senegal: they are home to a
rich ecosystem of mangroves and rice crops. Artisanal shrimp fishing are also an important economic activity for the region. The estuary functions as an “inverse” estuary : during the dry season (December-May) increased evaporation within the estuary results in an inflow of seawater into the estuary and an increase in salinity (up to ~50 psu) away from the river mouth in the shallow streams (called “bolons”). This salinity gradient reverses during the rainy season due to the freshwater discharge.
In this seminar, I will present the ORSTOM studies from the 80s, and how we revisit some of the scientific questions using CROCO modeling with colleagues from the Assane Seck University in Ziguinchor. Last I
will share my recent experience of field measurements made on board an artisanal fishing canoe.
