Description

Can iconic paintings tell us about past environmental change? We present evidence that paintings in London and Paris by J.M.W. Turner, Claude Monet, and other artists accurately represent trends in air pollution associated with 19th century industrialization.

Our results indicate that stylistic trends in Turner, Monet, and others’ works capture optical changes associated with an increasingly polluted atmosphere. That is, Impressionist paintings contain elements of polluted realism.
