Modeling internal wave dynamics in a NEMO-generated ocean

A one-way nesting approach to modeling nonhydrostatic internal waves in a 1/64 degree NEMO simulation of the western Mediterranean will be sketched. Mathematical issues arising from differences in resolution and dynamics between the parent and child simulations are examined to highlight the strengths and limitations of the approach.
In this example, the wind-driven flow in the mixed layer computed by NEMO excites a wave field at depth that has enhanced spatial structure and a more efficient transfer of energy to higher frequencies when simulated with an embedded nonydrostatic numerical model.
