This Integrated Project Water and Global Change (WATCH) brings together the hydrological, water resources and climate communities to analyse, quantify an predict the components of the current and future global water cycles and related water resources states, evaluate their uncertainties and clarify the overall vulnerability of global water resources related to the main societal and economic sectors. The key objectives of the project are:
- To integrate modelling of the water cycle into global and regional climate models
- To better quantify possible changes in the water cycle due to human influences and climate change in the period 2000-2100 (floods and droughts)
- To evaluate how the global water cycle and its extremes respond to future drivers of global change
- To develop a modelling and data framework to assess the future vulnerability of water as a resource
In order to achieve the project objectives, ORCHIDEE is used to model the 20 and 21st centuries. WATCH forcing data have been specially designed for the past century, they are taken from the ERA-40 reanalysis produced by ECMWF. The spatial resolution of the forcing data and the model simulations is 0.5 degrees latitude by longitude, covering the CRU global land mask. The hydrological analyse carried out is focused on large catchments present on the globe such as : the Amazon, Indus, Gange.... Concerning the 21st century simulations, similar analyses will be carried out. However, ORCHIDEE will then be forced by models outputs (IPSL, CNRM and ECHAM which has been forced by IPCC scenarios A2 and B1).
The seminar will first introduce the WATCH project and then review the work carried out with Orchidee.
