In the last decade, high-resolution numerical models have highlighted the central role of (sub)mesoscale dynamics in the ocean energy budget and biogeochemical cycles. At the same time, direct and quantitative observations of submesoscale processes remain particularly challenging, and many of the theoretical hypotheses and model results are still virtually untested in the field.

Next-generation SAR interferometry altimeters (SWOT; COMPIRA) will provide the first global observations of surface (sub)mesoscale dynamics. However, such missions still require an important phase of validation/calibration. Within the next decade, submesoscale-dedicated field experiments will thus play a key role in the development of next-generation numerical models and satellite missions.

The Gulf of Lion is particularly well suited for the direct investigation of submesoscale dynamics. A frontal feature was successfully investigated during the Latex10 campaign (1-24 September, 2010) by adopting a novel adaptive sampling strategy. The combined analysis of the collected Lagrangian and ship-based observations lead to identify in situ Lagrangian Coherent Structures, estimate eddy diffusivity, and quantify cross-shelf exchanges associated with the front.

A similar strategy will be used during the SeaGoLSWOT campaigns (Fall 2014; Spring 2016) in support of the first AirSWOT missions in the NW Mediterranean. Their innovative instrument configuration will provide a unique opportunity for investigating the coupling between altimetry anomalies and the three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical dynamics at the (sub)mesoscale. SeaGoLSWOT will represent a further step in the development of next-generation interdisciplinary submesoscale field campaigns which will contribute to improve our knowledge of submesoscale processes and, ultimately, further refine their representation in global climate models.
