The heterogeneous urban surface and anthropogenic activities directly impact both pollution emissions and urban climate conditions. A large urban area such as the Paris region, not only influences the near-surface micro-climate but rather affects dynamics of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). To better understand the ABL effects of transport and dilution on air quality, the processes linking surface-atmosphere exchanges (of energy and momentum) and urban boundary layer dynamics need to be better understood. A combination of advanced measurement approaches are exploited to monitor related processes across the relevant scales, such as the storage of energy within the urban canopy, the local-scale surface energy balance, and the urban boundary layer dynamics. Finally, it is highlighted how reduced vertical mixing contributes to the formation of pollution episodes. IPSL is expanding the capabilities of the Paris Region urban atmosphere observatory by adding new sites and measurement approaches, to prepare for a series of (inter-)national projects taking place over the next few years ahead of the Paris JO2024.
