Séminaire
Cloud-climate feedbacks and subsequently climate sensitivity simulated by general circulation models are highly dependent on cloud
parameterisations and the choice of individual parameters. In the presentation, I will give an overview of several studies developing and
applying observations-based metrics useful to evaluate and constrain cloud parameterisations in large-scale models. We analysed the
subgrid-scale variability of humidity by different means, hinting to problems in the basic cloud fraction parameterisation. Precipitation
formation is analysed and improved by using subgrid-variability of cloud water. Metrics to assess the cloud thermodynamic phase and aerosol-cloud interactions are proposed and applied. Finally, some attempts to use data assimilation for cloud parameter constraints are presented.
