Description

This seminar will focus on near-field pollutant dispersion within 1-kilometer scales in urban environments, discussing critical issues, recent advances, and current challenges in the field. In densely built city settings, pollutant dispersion is strongly affected by building configurations, turbulence characteristics, and local climate impacts.

The seminar will begin with an overview of pollutant dynamics in the urban boundary layer, exploring how turbulence structures, street canyon effects, and the urban heat island influence pollutant retention and distribution.

Additionally, it will cover the latest research developments, including high-resolution numerical modeling (such as CFD and multi-scale coupled models), sensor network monitoring, and machine learning. These advancements have significantly improved the precision of dynamic pollutant predictions and health risk assessments. Key challenges will be highlighted, particularly around improving model applicability under uncertainties, integrating complex chemical reaction mechanisms, and effectively forecasting pollutant behavior during extreme weather events.

The seminar will conclude by discussing frontier solutions such as coupling aerosol dynamics models, optimizing sensor networks for source term estimation, and the potential of AI algorithms in dispersion forecasting. This session will provide researchers with a contemporary perspective on pollutant dispersion in urban environments and explore collaborative opportunities for atmospheric chemists in advancing this area.
