JIPSL Luberon School Visits
Anastasia, Hugo and Evéa are Phd students at LSCE and LOCEAN. They visited the Parc naturel régional du Luberon in the south of France, where they discussed climate change with students from primary and secondary schools, travelling between Cavaillon and Manosque. During these sessions, the children were introduced to the fundamentals of climate change, its global and local impacts on France, and the crucial role of the oceans in regulating the climate.
To make these concepts more tangible, they used IPSL experiments to demonstrate the thermal expansion of the ocean, the ocean acidification, and the albedo effect, as well as an OCE game on extreme weather events. The researchers also shared insights into their work, showcasing examples of oceanographic research cruises.
A particular highlight was the climate change fanzine created by Ana Claudia Parracho from LOCEAN, which proved especially effective in engaging children in CE2-CM2 classes. Teachers were really happy about their interventions, and the children excited byt this interventions out of the ordinary.Teachers were delighted with the interventions, and the children were excited by these out-of-the-ordinary activities. Some teachers even expressed their hope that other PhD students would return in the coming years.
The Parc naturel régional du Luberon played a key role in making these projects possible. Through its extensive network of partners and existing collaborations with local organisations, the park facilitated initial contacts and helped establish connections with the schools and institutions where the activities took place. Without their assistance, the organisation and coordination of the projects would have been far more challenging.
