Contexte

We offer an internship position at LSCE (Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement), a highly active research institute in the field of climate science and environmental studies, located in France. Here you can gain hands-on experience in conducting research, working with advanced climate models, and collaborating with experts in the field. The internship period can be 3-6 months. For those who excel in the internship program, we can offer the possibility of continuing their academic journey through a Master’s or Ph.D.’s program.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting data analysis, modeling and visualization on IGN forest inventory data to provide insights of the ecological changes of French forests under the past 20 years’ climate change and forest management practices. The candidate will be expected to conduct spatial-temporal patterns and trends of tree species distribution, biomass, and mortality and explore the causes of those changes use statistical modeling or machine learning models. The candidate will develop online tools to visualize the analysis results using charts or web application. This project aims to provide better scientific understanding of the ecological changes of French forests in the past 30 years, and potentially guide the forestry management practices and decision-making processes.

Description

The successful candidate must be able to conduct base level + one advanced level tasks based on the candidate’s expertise.

  • Collect and process IGN forest inventory data
  • Conduction spatial-temporal analysis for the patterns and trends of tree species distribution, biomass, and mortality
  • Explore the potential causes of those changes with statistical models using IGN forest
  • inventory data and other available datasets, such as climate data and land use change data
  • Visualize the analysis results with charts
  • Develop a user-friendly static web application for the forest inventory data as well as the statistical analysis results from base level
  • Improve the prediction model by collecting other relevant datasets, such as satellite image, extreme weather, natural distracters, and pollutant data.
  • Explain the model performance with explainable machine learning tools. The application needs to be able to present the users with both time series and the mapBachelor’s or Master’s degree in ecology, data science, statistics, or a related field. Able to communicate and present the work to the colleagues with English.
