Global food systems’ effects on planetary health
Résumé
Food systems being highly complex socio-environmental systems, the solutions to improve their environmental and health outcomes require employing innovative interdisciplinary approaches to understand the interactions and dynamics within them.
In my scientific career so far, along with colleagues and students from diverse disciplines, I have used interdisciplinary approaches to study global food systems and environmental sustainability, with a broad objective of identifying feasible solutions to improve the health and environmental outcomes of global food systems.
In this presentation, I will give an overview of my previous work, focusing on four main research avenues:
(i) Water for food: virtual water trade networks,
(ii) Sustainability of agricultural water use and trade,
(iii) Multi-dimensional assessment of food systems environmental sustainability, and
(iv) Food systems and planetary health.
I will synthesize the broader contributions of my previous research and provide perspectives on inter-disciplinary sustainability science, highlighting collaborations and contributions from Master students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows I have worked with.
