Perspectives on stratospheric aerosol observations: Importance, Challenges & Future Directions
Corinna Kloss (Forschungszentrum Jülich)
Séminaire du LMD à l’ENS.
Description
Stratospheric aerosols play a central role in Earth’s climate and chemistry and our ability to observe them is increasingly challenged by volcanic eruptions and extreme wildfires. This talk highlights how these events are changing the stratospheric aerosol layer, where current observation systems fall short, and which measurement strategies are needed to secure a reliable global record. Balloon-borne observations will be presented showing the impact of the Hunga eruption on the northern hemisphere and the ongoing development toward a new lightweight multi-parameter aerosol sensor for application on weather balloons will be introduced.
