As the representation of the urban surface is becoming more mainstream within Land Surface Models, this presentation looks back at how these schemes have developed over the last three decades. Starting from the first scheme to be implemented within an operational weather forecasting model at the Met Office, the presentation follows the subsequent developments along with the deficiencies identified from the two international model comparison projects.

With the move towards higher resolution weather and climate modelling, and the need for more accurate information, advice and warnings for city dwellers, the current challenges facing coupled simulations are identified and some ways to overcome these issues are proposed.
