Résumé :

Tropical cyclones continue to pose a fascinating challenge to scientific understanding. This is especially poignant at a time when climate is evolving rapidly, creating a demand for predicting how these storms will respond. After briefly reviewing the physics of hurricanes, I will provide an overview of historical and paleo-climatological evidence for their past variations and attempt to link those with our current physical understanding of climate control of hurricane activity, focusing on the effects of anthropogenic change sin greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations, ending the talk with a discussion of how physics can be brought to bear on the practical problem of estimating hurricane risk in a changing climate.
