I will describe several ongoing community efforts that are building stronger connections between those that produce climate information (climate modelers and observational networks) and those that apply climate information for the benefit of society. In particular, I will discuss efforts to use climate hazard information to connect the scientific basis (WG1) and the vulnerability, impacts, and adaptation communities (WG2) in the upcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report (IPCC AR6). My own work has focused on multi-discipline, multi-scale, multi-model, multi-method applications within the 1000+ member community of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP), which involves adding detail to global vegetation models as well as providing larger perspective to local crop models. These connections also spantime scales, as seen in recent efforts to connect the climate change and disaster communities within the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The current phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) also now features the Vulnerability, Impacts, Adaptation, and Climate Services (VIACS) Advisory Board, which is an effort to connect the science of climate change, the science of climate impacts, and the practice of climate information operatilization. Together these community efforts point toward emergent hot topics for collaboration and scientific advances.
