Résumé :

Expedition 370 of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) aimed to explore the limits of life in the deep subseafloor biosphere off Cape Muroto (Nankai Through, Japan), a location where temperature increases with sediment depth beyond the known maximum of microbial life (~120°C). These are also temperatures where catagenesis, the thermal breakdown of organic material to liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons, occurs, which could directly provide an energy and carbon source for the indigenous microbial communities living at high temperatures. This talk will present preliminary shipboard and shorebased results of Expedition 370 addressing basic questions on the factors controlling the extent and activity of the deep biosphere.
